Collection consists of 51 ALS, mainly by those involved in the disposition of Sykes' collections of books, prints, drawings, and paintings after his death in 1823. Correspondence, to and from: Sykes' solicitor, John Lockwood, with book auctioneer Robert Harding Evans; Samuel Sotheby, in charge of selling the pictures (Sykes' bankruptcy and illness are mentioned); and William Young Ottley, an artist who was acting as Sotheby's agent and out of whose work many difficulties arose. Some letters include lists of books, bills, accounts, and receipts connected with the sales. Also correspondence, ca. 1813-1818, between Sykes and his solicitors, including Lockwood, relating to financial details concerning land, carriage, bonds, and books.

John Lockwood was a Quaker and a member of New York Yearly Meeting. He was born around 1793, and married Amy A. Arnold. They resided in Poughkeepsie, New York. English bibliophile, picture collector, and member of Parliament for Sledmore in Yorkshire where his estate was located. Sykes' library was considered one of the finest in England and was especially strong in early printed editions of the Greek and Roman classics, incunables, and 16th century English poetry.
